Salve Incufriends! La notizia è ormai di pubblico dominio: Brandon Boyd esporrà i suoi lavori a Roma, insieme al talentuoso Marco "Seven Moods" Pisanelli, il prossimo 30 ottobre. Per l'occasione la nostra boss Valentina ha intervistato Marco, fans degli Incubus della prima ora, e Loretta Di Tuccio e Gilda Lavia, le titolari della galleria Rossmut di Roma dove si terrà la mostra. Valentina: ciao Marco, il tuo nome non è nuovo qui in Incubus Italia, puoi raccontare in breve qualcosa su di te per chi non ti conosce?
Marco: sono un ragazzo lucano, precisamente di Matera, ma vivo a Roma da 18 anni, sono un musicista e pittore, suono nella band "Tiromancino". La mia vita si divide tra il palco e la stanza in cui dipingo.
V: raccontaci il tuo percorso artistico, sia come musicista, sia come artista grafico.
M: ho cominciato a suonare all'età di 14 anni, avevo messo su una band con i compagni di scuola, facevamo metal, per anni ho suonato metal poi sono passato al rock, ho fatto parte della band "LE MANI" e da qualche anno suono nei "Tiromancino", una band che nasconde molte sorprese, soprattutto per chi viene a vedere i nostri concerti, tutto ciò è avvenuto parallelamente alla pittura. Ho frequentato l'Accademia delle Belle Arti di Roma, disegno sin da ragazzino, insomma la musica e la pittura fanno parte della mia vita da sempre.
V: da cosa trai ispirazione per creare i tuoi quadri?
M: Le immagini che animano le mie tele, in un certo senso, si materializzano nella mia testa quando sono nel dormiveglia, avviene quasi sempre così, l'idea per un nuovo quadro è legata a sensazioni a stati d'animo ed energie che la mia mente immagazzina vivendo, poi la notte ho l'idea precisa di quello che voglio dipingere. sono estremamente attratto da ciò che un volto può regalarmi, completo l'enigma il mistero e l'ambiguità unendo elementi come animali e simboli alchemici.
V: so che tempo fa avevi creato una linea di abbigliamento chiamata 7MOODS: è ancora attiva o ti dedichi esclusivamente a dipingere e suonare?
M: Ho messo su il marchio 7MOODS per gioco, ma poi è diventata una cosa abbastanza seria, infatti è stato venduto in più di 100 boutique italiane, l'ho portato avanti per 5 collezioni, ma adesso ho preso una pausa, la musica e la pittura mi portano via tutto il tempo che ho a disposizione.
V: come è nata questa collaborazione con Brandon Boyd? So che sei un suo grande fans, per te fare questa mostra è come un sogno che si realizza..
M: Seguo gli Incubus dal primo album, in Italia all'epoca non li conosceva nessuno, mio fratello per sbaglio mi regalò un disco, pochi giorni dopo ero totalmente in fissa, ho seguito il loro percorso disco dopo disco, visti dal vivo ogni volta che sono venuti in Italia. Mi ha sempre affascinato il loro modo di essere lontano dalle mode, dalle tendenze, una t-shirt bianca un jeans e via sul palco a suonare quello che davvero hanno sempre voluto, infatti ogni disco è diverso dall'altro. Mi ha sempre coinvolto la cura degli arrangiamenti e il loro sound. Non ho mai conosciuto Brandon di persona e pensare che facciamo entrambi parte di un unico evento è davvero eccitante...Loretta e Gilda della galleria d'arte Rossmut di Roma hanno avuto l'idea di creare un evento in cui la musica e la pittura fossero complici e hanno pensato a Brandon. Lo hanno contattato e gli hanno fatto vedere i miei quadri e mostrato dei video in cui suono e lui ha accettato di fare la cosa in tempi talmente brevi che non ho avuto il tempo di realizzare la cosa. Sono davvero onorato e soprattutto scioccato di quanta umiltà ci possa essere in una persona super conosciuta, credo sia davvero un grande!
V: quali sono i tratti che accomunano (se ci sono) lo stile di Brandon Boyd e quello di Seven Moods?
M: anche se diversi per la tecnica di realizzazione,io credo che in comune ci sia l'esigenza di lasciare un segno tangibile,di rendere visibile quello che vediamo attraverso la nostra immaginazione,il mondo dell'onirico e del surreale,e renderlo visibile alla gente trasportandolo sulla tela...ma credo ci sia anche un istinto di evasione,un po' come rifugiarsi in un posto segreto.

Valentina: come è nata l’idea della mostra “Doorway to identity”? Conoscevate già Brandon Boyd come artista? Perché questo titolo?
Loretta e Gilda: l'idea della mostra nasce dalla volontà di avvicinarci al contesto musica; dopo aver conosciuto Marco Pisanelli ed aver visto i suoi lavori, il fatto che dividesse la sua passione per l'arte con quella della musica, ci è sembrato uno spunto interessante su cui costruire un percorso che riguardasse le opere e al tempo stesso l'identità dell'essere artista. Brandon Boyd, del quale conoscevo i lavori da tempo, sembrava essere l'artista perfetto per completare ed arricchire il progetto; in maniera totalmente simmetrica, entrambi dividono la loro vita tra arte e musica, con una produzione artistica che, nonostante le specificità individuali, vede le rispettive opere comunicare tra loro. Il titolo della mostra, Doorway to identity, rispecchia questa sorta di gioco delle due identità di artisti/musicisti che si confrontano a loro volta con quelle dei soggetti che animano le loro opere.
V: Ci potete dare un anticipazione su che tipo di opere vedremo in mostra?
L&G: Le opere presenti in mostra saranno tutti lavori inediti per entrambi gli artisti; sono opere connotate in maniera decisa dai rispettivi linguaggi che li rappresentano.
V: La vostra galleria tratta arte di diverso tipo: quali artisti preferite?
L&G: La nostra galleria si occupa di arte contemporanea ospitando diverse tipologie di progetti con una particolare attenzione rivolta ai giovani artisti. Si tratta di uno spazio "ibrido" in cui è fondamentale l'idea di contaminazione e comunicazione tra le varie forme d'arte, dalla pittura alla performance, dalla fotografia alla video arte, coinvolgendo il design e la moda con l'esclusiva su Roma della linea Technobohèmian disegnata da John Malkovich.

Valentina: Hello Marco, your name is not new to some of Incubusitalia's fans! Can you tell something about yourself for those who doesn't know you?
Marco: I’m a Lucan boy, precisely from Matera, but I’ve lived in Rome for the last eighteen years. I’m a musician and a painter, and actually I play in the Italian band “Tiromancino”. As you can see, my life is divided between the stage and the room where I paint.
V: tell us something about your career as a musician and a painter.
M: I started playing music at age 14, I'd put on a band with classmates, playing metal. For years I've been playing metal then I switched to rock, I was in a rock band called “Le Mani" and in the last years I’ve played with "Tiromancino", a band that hides many surprises, especially for those coming to see our shows, and all this was done in parallel with painting. I attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, I drewsince I was achild.. long story short, music and painting are part of my life ever since.
V: Where do you get inspiration for your paintings?
M: The imagesthat animate my paintings, in a sense, they materialize in my head when I'm half asleep, it happens almost all the time, and the idea for a new paint is linked to feelings and moods and energies that my mind stores during the day, then at night I have the exact idea of what I want to paint. I’m extremely attracted to what a face can give to me, and then I complete the riddle of the mystery and ambiguity by combining elements such as animals and alchemical symbols.
V: I know that long ago you'd created a clothing line called 7MOODS: is still active or you dedicate yourself exclusively to painting and playing music?
M: I put on the brand 7MOODS almost as a distraction, but then it became something quite serious. in fact it has been sold in more than 100 Italian boutique, I've created 5 collections but now I took a break, music and painting are taking away all the time I have available.
V: How did this collaboration with Brandon Boyd started? I know you're one of his greatest fans, for you to do this exhibition with him is like a dream come true ..
M: I've followed Incubus from day one, no one knew them in Italy at the time. My brother accidentally gave me a disc and a few days later I was totally obsessed! I've followed their path, album after album, and I've seen them live whenever they came to Italy. I have always been fascinated by the way they are far from fashion, trends...a white t-shirt and jeans and then off on stage to play what you really have always wanted to, because each disc is different. I have always admired the care of the arrangements and their sound. I've never knew Brandon personally and thinking that we are both part of a single event is really exciting ... Loretta and Giulia, owner of the the Rossmut Art Gallery in Rome, had the idea to create an event in which music and painting where mixed together and their first thought was to contact Brandon. They contacted showed him my paintings and some videos of me playing music and he agreed to do the thing at a time so short that I did not have time to realize it. I am truly honored and especially shocked by how much humility there can be in a super famous person, I think that it’s a great man!
V: What are the traits (if any) that unite the style of Brandon Boyd and Seven Moods?
M: Although for different construction technique, I believe that we have in common the need to leave a tangible sign, to make visible what we see through our imagination, the world of dreams and the surreal, and make it visible to the people transporting him to the canvas ... but I think there is also an instinct to escape, just like a refuge in a secret place.

Valentina: how did the idea of the exhibition "Doorway to identity" was born? Did you already know Brandon Boyd as an artist? Why this particular title?
Laura and Gilda: the idea for the exhibition was born from our desire to get closer to the context of music. After meeting Marco Pisanelli and seeing his work, the fact that he shared his passion for art with the music, it seemed to us an interesting starting point on which to build a path that was about the works and at the same time the identity of being an artist. I’ve known the artistic side of Brandon Boyd years ago, and he seemed to be the perfect artist to complete and enrich the project. In a totally symmetrical way, they both divide their lives between art and music, with an artistic production that, in spite of their individual characteristics, see their works communicate with each other. The title of the exhibition, “Doorway to identity”, reflects this sort of game of identities of the two artists / musicians that are confronted in turn with those of the subjects that animate their work.
V: can you give us an anticipation of what kind of work we’ll see at the exhibition?
L&G: all the works of the exhibition will be new and unpublished for both artists. Works are connoted in a manner determined by the relevant languages that represent them.
V: your art gallery deal with different form of arts: Which kind of artists do you prefer?
L&G: our gallery deal with contemporary art by hosting different types of projects with a particular focus on young artists. It is an "hybrid"space in which the idea of contamination and communication between various art forms is crucial, from painting to performance, from photography to video art, involving the design and fashion with exclusive rights in Rome on the line “Technobohemian” drawn by John Malkovich.
